Car emergency kit
You should always be prepared. Keep a stash of essentials zipped up together. Some of my must-haves include:
- Emergency blanket
- First aid
- Extra ziplocs
- Duct tape
The ideal place to store this is in the glove compartment. Some might think the trunk, but if you do indeed have an emergency, you don’t want to have to travel farther than you need to in order to get to these essentials. (via Organizing Junkie)
Create a secret compartment
With this container, and this to cover it, you can create a compartment that blends in with your car’s interior. Stick some cash or other important stuff and stick in your cupholder. Because it’s not that high, you should still be able to use that cup holder for its original purpose to hold cups. (via Gadget Hacks)
Or from the hooks where your dry cleaning would hang would be the perfect distance for kids in car seats to reach their things, like sunglasses, without you having to give them an awkward hand from the driver seat. (via Organizing Junkie)
Give trash a home in your car
Instead of in random crevices of your car or the floormats, keep a receptacle lined with a bag to centralize your trash. Something like this works great because it’s narrow enough to not take up too much floor space and has a locking lid to keep odors in. (via Better Homes and Gardens)
Keep food contained
You know that eating is inevitable in the car, so prepare for fast food stops or snack time with dollar store baskets that have compartments. Just like an organized kitchen, you want to take preventative measures to keep food messes at bay. Trust me, SO much easier to have this handy basket than to balance food and drinks on your lap or floor of the car in a moving vehicle. (via Lookie What I Did)
Keep jackets out of sight
As useful as the dry cleaning hooks are for hanging jackets and coats in the car, it can be pretty annoying to have it block your line of vision or swishing against your legs. Something like this will keep coats, gloves, and other accessories overhead. It's like a closet organization hack in your car. (via Popular Mechanics)
Learn from this trunk of the year mom
Check out how she keeps her trunk super, ultra organized. Hanging shoe organizers, hooks, storage bins, labels, and a complete list of what she stores in there are all laid out in detail. (via The Castro Family Happynings)
Other ideas are to keep totes hanging from the headrests to have them handy for grocery shopping. The bins are perfect too for keeping potential food messes contained. Plus, when you reach home, you can bring the entire bin into your house to save on the number of trips back and forth from your house to your car.

Create a diaper changing station
How many times I’ve changed my kid’s diaper in the car. This portable changing station is not only convenient, it gives me peace of mind because I know how clean it is as opposed to the condition of those in public restrooms. (via Scottsdale City Moms Blog)
